Hi jeanette, Good luck with your first trip into the world of parish records. please bear in mind that not all parish records are available at records/archive offices as i found out recently the parish i was researching for marriages stopped at 1885 in the local library so i contacted the records office and theirs too stopped at the same date so i had to contact the church concerned and i made an appointment to view them at the church with the vicar. good luck kaz

Anne, Max, Gwyn and George Thanks for the tips. I don't feel quite so nervous now. Sorry I'm not offering look ups for other people yet, but I thought it would be better to familiarise myself with things first. Jeanette

I find it is also a good idea to make a note of all the records you have checked even if there are no ancestors there. It will save ages at another date because you will not be able to remember if you have looked for that date/item. A negative result can be just as important as a positive one! Anne

Sometimes it's 'pencils only' so be prepared. As regards searching, I'd agree go armed with dates, locations etc. and write down which parish etc you searched and what dates- even if you don't come up with anything. It saves time another day. I usually log anything found on a particular surname which I know to be on my tree. Don't try to make sense of all the information at the archives, just get it recorded and look at it all later at home.

Sometimes its the books but mostly its microfiche. I'd suggest you write down all the people you want to lookup before you go and when you believe they married/died/born. It will often save you time. Take your partner with you and get him to do some lookups to speed things up.

I have booked my first session at our local archives this week to search the parish registers. As it is my first time I was wondering what I will be faced with. Will it be the books themselves or microfiche? How easy is it to find the information you are looking for? Any tips on searching? Thanks Jeanette
