Jackie - that's great! Thanks! I think it's quite possible that Henry and Anna are the parents of Joseph Snr. We hadn't noticed this couple - partly because we haven't known which of the non-London Jealouses to get excited about!! We still just need to track down Joseph's birth so that we can fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together...

Linda I don't know if this is any help, or if you have already found it 1881 Census: Address: 10 Lower East Street, Charlton Next Woolwich, Kent Henry Jealous born 1802 Wisbech, Cambridge Retired Farmer Anna Jealous born 1803 Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk. They seem to be the only Jealous's in Charlton at this time. Also noticed that on the 1901 census Joseph's birthplace is stated as Woolwich not Charlton. Good luck and Happy Hunting.

Neil - that's great! Thank you! This is a similar address to the one we have for the 1901 census so it's definitely them. I wonder if anyone has access to the 1871 census...?

Thanks for your help everyone! We too have found a number of other Jelouses, Jelluses etc. Joseph and otherwise - but until we can get Joseph Jealous's birth certificate of c.1852 we have no way of knowing whether his father's roots were in Cambridge, Liverpool or wherever... Come to think it, the 1881 census says that Joseph Jnr was born in Charlton, so presumably that is what his birth certificate will say which still won't help us with Joseph Snr!! Neil - if you could have a look on the 1851 census that would be marvellous! Thanks!

Linda You could try looking on the 1851 census for Charlton, Kent and look for his parents, or try the parish records for Charlton and look for his baptism. I've looked on freebmd and on familysearch without any luck for any relatives. Seems to be a gift of a surname, because quite unusual, but looks are often deceptive! I will look for him on the 1891 census if you would like me to - may show some brothers or other useful information Neil

I have tried a search with the spelling you provided and zilch! However, there is some info if the name was JELOUS - have you tried this spelling? 3 marraiges on Freebmd - Emma Jelour Dec.Qrt 1841, Billericay, James Jelous March 1869 Burton on Trent and Sarah Jane Jelous Liverpool June 1877. I'm helping a friend with his Tree - and we've come up against one of those inevitable brick walls (I'm sure that's a mixed metaphor...) We are looking for the birth details of a Joseph JEALOUS who was born c.1852 in Charlton/Woolwich, Kent. We know he married Sarah Ryder in 1877 but we can't find his birth anywhere. We've found his entry on the 1881 census and, at that time, he was living in Fellow Street, London, Middlesex. Joseph's father was another Joseph. We assume he would have been born c.1832 - but we have no real idea where or when. Unfortunately, Jealous is one of those names that is difficult to research as if you try to Google it or Ask Jeeves it comes up with thousands of irrelevancies!!! Any help will be much appreciated.
