I have received a copy of my ggggrandfathers will dated 1875, he died the following year. He is leaving to his wife his furniture and stock of the Inn he owns. To his children he leaves six houses that he owns, including two he has just built and his building trade including tools, machinery etc. Also some land and orchards. When the will was proved the following year it has marked on it "effects under £30" or it may be £300. What exactly does effects mean? Is it his personal belongings or his entire estate minus any expenses and debts? Thanks Helena

I think that effects would be his possessions other than those already mentioned in the will. Probably small items that he didn`t think worth mentioning when he wrote his will.

That is right. It's everything else that he owned that hasn't already been mentioned.

Thank you both. I was a bit confused about it as the property mentioned would amount to more than £300 even in 1876. Thanks for the help. Regards Helena
