If you know your relative's unit you could see if they have a website or museum and contact them direct. My great grandfather was in the Machine Gun Corps during the 1st world war, I emailed a researcher off their internet site and he not only sent me details of the unit in the post but asked someone to visit the PRO and got me photocopies of the medal lists and discharge papers (unfortunately the other paperwork seems to have been destroyed) and all for about £20 - bargain! Try Chris Weymouth, Webmaster on th 1914-1918.net website I have had a quote and have a search in progress, it varies between 45 pound and 75 pound depending on what you require. At the end of your search he will advise what he has found with an invoice and make sure you are satisfied with the results. I will advise when I receive my results and my opinion of the service.

Julie, I have used a gentleman, and he charged £20, that was for the search at Kew, and all copies of the paperwork and postage. If you would like his e-mail let me know. Eileen in Portsmouth

I looked up some names on the PRO site (I think) and picked one virtually at random. There was a bit of a delay in getting the information because of he had been off sick but the information on my Grandfather from WWI gave me several very crucial facts. I also got some copies of records of my Great Grandfather but these just confirmed information from the Regimental Museum library. It was not feasible for me to get down to Kew myself. Martin

Thanks Carol and Katrina, Carol if you could let me have the web address, I'd appreciate it, if it's not too much trouble. Katrina - I've sent an email to Anthony, although looking at his web pages, I am a bit worried that my (hopefully) simple requirements will be a bit beneath him! Thanks for your replies - glad to see other people are still up! Julie

I would reccommend an ordinary Genealogist - Anthony Adolph who helps out here. He's been a great help in the past when I've inquired about things (thought never actually employed him). You might've seen him on LivingTV - he did that Antiques Ghostshow programme a few months ago and always seemed to come up with interesting data (military stuff for some people too). You can take a look at his website by clicking on the resource Centre. -Kat

I found a website where this was done by someone. I asked for a quote and it was £45. Being the cynical type where money is concerned, I found myself wondering, how do I know I am not going to get a pile of fiction. If you want to have a look for yourself, I will try and find the site again for you.

Hi, has anyone used a military researcher to find records of relatives in WW1? I have my GGF's army number and regiment, and death cert, but can't get any time off work in the near future to go to the PRO (even though I live in London!). Also, any ideas of how much it would cost? Thanks Julie
