Thanks everyone for your help. I was being a bit thick!! I hadn't clicked onto the right page. The one I was looking at had to have the exact DOB etc. I've now got it right (I think!!)

Kerry If you are ordering online, you only have to fill in the boxes that have a red asterisk against them. These are the mandoratry fields. You only fill in the others if you are sure of your info. Less is more Margaret

You only have to put that info in if you have it otherwise the year, qtr, district and ref no are only required.

I've ordered all my certificates online so far and you don't need to know the date of birth if you have the Name, year, quarter, district, page and volume number - the same info you can get from freeBMD and 1837. Christopher - were you perhaps purchasing a recent certificate? I know the forms have optional fields to fill in so you guarantee that you get the right ones back but if you have the info I mention above you should have been fine Zoe

I would be interested to know this answer too, i know when i went to the family records office, if you did not know the names of the parents etc, you had to give 2 forms of ID

Aplogies if this question has been asked before, but.... I've got stuck finding info on my Grandad so I decided that maybe it was time to send for his birth certificate in the hope that it would answer some questions. I've just looked on the 1837 site and found which quarter and year he was born, but when it comes to filling in the form it asks for a date of birth and where born. If I don't have the exact information, how can I fill in the mandatory parts? Kerry
