Censuses or BMD records?

If you can look for any BMD on Freebmd record all the details, 1837-1902 this is free, any from 1903 on 1837(.)com if you know the date (within a year or so) will help that will save a bit of money. You can then order all the certificates up there at a cost of £7 each, saving a bit more money. Make your list and don't forget a book to write everything down. Bits of papers get lost as I have found. Take some lunch and drink. You can buy there but it will cost more & £1 for the locker You can then spend all the time on the census as the others have said. But don't forget to enjoy yourself. Have fun. Irene

Thanks very much to all of you for your thought. I think you are right, so that's what I'll do. And Robert, I'll also go to that webpage for the census writing - in fact I could use it right now! All I need for a good afternoon's researching is a pair of skates!! Penny

I would go for the censuses first and then BMD if there's time or if the census throws up something you want to follow through. Go with a list of what you want so that you can do all the film references in one go when you get there. Hope you have a good time.

I would agree with Deborah, but take time to record correctly what you have got rather than get as much as possible. PAF5 has a printable blank census page which might assist. Have a look at this.......... http://www.british-genealogy(.)com/resources/census/writing(.)html (minus brackets) it's a guide to census handwriting, might help. Bob

Hi Penelope, It's all amatter of personal preference, and what you need most. But my preference would be the Census. All be it at a price, you can obtain the bmd's online, anytime, or at another local record office, but the census are not so readily available. You have the whole country from 1841 to 1901 at your fingertips, that's where I'd be!! Debbie

I have the chance of a free trip to London next Saturday (22nd) so I have decided to visit the Record Office! My quandary is this....as we don't leave Telford until 9.30am, we will not get to London until lunch-time, so I will only have about four hours (if I'm lucky) to research my tree. Do I do the censuses or the BMD? Which do you think will benefit me most? Perhaps I will be able to do both?? I don't know as I've only ever been once. Help please! Penny
