Handfasting is defined in the Chamber's Scot's Dictionary: Cohabitation for a year with intent to marriage.

Handfasting was a legal formof marriage in Scotland for centuries. The couple held hands over water and declared themselves married with or without witnesses. Itg was perfectly legal but naturally frowned upon by the established Church.

If it is a Scottish one, possibly their term for by licence as opposed to after banns.

Where did you see it? Sounds intriguing though. Could it be an old name for cohabiting or living together. Maybe a large age difference

Hi Shona, I typed in irregular mariage and it came up with quite a few sites, it seems to be mainly a scottish term, something to do with not having the banns read. If you go to www(.)geocities(.)com/Heartland/Meadows/5209/irreg(.)htm there is some information. Hope this is helpful Gen
