Sorry I can't help with this one, but these names all appear in my great-grandfather Charles Cleaver's memoirs of railway work around the same time. They may mean something to someone: Joe Garratt killed in Marsh Lane tunnel Teddy Barford (Dorset Teddy) killed on Chapeltown Railway 1896 George Everitt shot and killed Hampshire Stan 1899 Chipping Sodbury Sam Mathers, Bill Potter, Claychopper Aylott, Jack Duffy, John Willis, John Cragg, George Preston, Phil Heywood, Sam Checkley, Bill Collins, Chris Goodwin and Harry Tufton all worked on the Chapeltown and Barnsley railway 1895. 1899 Fareham to Alton: Privett tunnel : Tom Weare (father of Charley, Albert and Harry), Harry Haydon,Smiling Johnny Read, John Best (Johnny the Diver), Jim Owen, 3 Avery brothers, Jack Edwards, inspector. Ike Stephens, 2 Clarke brothers, Albert Rowland, Jack Jefferies, Albert Newton Larraper), Devon George Jones, Totnes Jack. Charles goes on to list a lot of the jobs he worked on until 1944. His grandfather started working on the railways one hundred years earlier!

Sorry Fi, didn't realise it was a Society. You can look on there under members interests to see if anyone is researching your name, or you can e-mail the contacts listed for advice. Maz. XX

Hi, Railway records are held at the PRO at Kew. If you go to their website there is a leaflet that tells you about their holdings. The only way to get them is a personal visit. Hope this helps a little, Gwynne

I wonder if someone might be able to help me find details of my great great grandfather who was a railway worker until 1880 when he died in an accident on the railway. He worked for the London + North Western Railway and his name was Charles Howe. Any info gratefully received. Thanks for your help. Fi
