Hi Jackie I discovered my gt gt grandfather had been divorced as it stated on his second marriage certificate in 1879 under the heading condition: "The divorced husband of Elizabeth Butterworth, formerly Oxley". From that information I have been able to find his first marriage in 1868 and also his divorce in 1872! Reasons as to why are still unknown as yet but can't wait to find out!! Best wishes Helen

My gt grandad left his first wife and child, lived with another and had 2 children, then left her, he then lived with another and had six children with her, then his first wife died and so he married the mother of six and went on to have another 2 children with her. that was in the late 1880's and early 1900's. Won't say what I think of him. Divorce obviously didn't come into it but might explain delays in getting married again. Lorraine

Hi, It would say on the cert that the previous marriage was dissolved. Divorce was rare and expensive until the 1940s. Gwynne
