thanks ladies, I am also considering the possibility she may have been irish, where would I find irish records even though I dont know whether its Northern or southern Ireland?

Did you look under the alternative spelling of DAVIES? I found some, dont know if one is yours. Hi Helen You can order a birth certificate even if you do not know the reference, it will cost more but as you know the date of birth and father's name, they should be able to find it for you. Jeannie

I have tried everything to find my g/mothers birth certificate, tried searching for 10 years either side of her birth year in 1837 online. Any suggestions, her name was Mabel Irene Davis her birthday was 13th August 1912 - I also cant find any record of her father Richard Charles Davis' birth/marriage although I do have his death certificate he died in Caterham surrey in 1954 aged 88, according to his death cert he was a domestic gardener.
