As Christmas is fast approaching and I have a pressie list to make, what can anyone recommend that I should ask for? (geneaology-based pressies only!!) I am new to family research and know how costly this hobby can become so I want to tap into everyone's brains. What item has been YOUR best buy?? Most of my relies seem to be coming from East London, if that helps.... |

Hi Aileen. How about membership of the East of London Family History Society - you don't have to live nearby or attend any meetings. Subscription to your favourite Family History Magazine. Storage solutions for certificates - try S & N Genealogy supplies. Albums for your photos. Folders for your notes. Money for certificates. The Society of Genealogists produces a booklet 'My ancestors were Londoners' by Chris Webb for 4 quid. Look through the adverts in Family History Magazines for ideas. Try and get to a family history fair - you will find plenty to buy there!! www(.)familyhistoryfairs(.)co(.)uk Hope this helps. I never have any trouble spending other people's money!!! Maz. XX |

I can endorse Sue's recommendation of the charts. I ordered mine tea-time Tuesday, they came this morning (Thursday) by first class post. They are reasonably priced. |

I've asked my mum if she will buy me a couple of certificates (they are her ancestors just to encourage her). I am also asking people for money so that I can pool my resources and buy a set of Census CDs for Lancashire where most of my ancestors are from. It works out cheaper to buy the set than to get people to buy them individually. Mel |

Why not a years subscription to the county Family History Society where you will be doing your research. You will get a magazine every 3 months or so. A chance to place some adds and ask for help. Irene |

For anyone researching Scottish ancestors, I would suggest a gift coucher of New Register House in Edinburgh (£17). If any of my family are reading this - I would be very happy with one of those thank you :o)) Regards Margaret |

Hi, why not buy the 'Archer Software' CD Surname Atlas. (about £13.00) Just type in any surname and up comes a map showing the distribution of that surname in the 1881 census. Endless Fun You can also print off the map. Data can be shown as absolute numbers in the census per county or better still, numbers per 100 in a county. This last method is more indicative of the origin of your surname in the UK. |
