Hi Ruth. I have had a look there with several combinations ie. putting in his name, then, Manchester, then the occupation but haven't found anything so far. Thanks for the thought anyway. Mel

Thanks for the advice Mary. I can't get there myself at the moment but my parents are in Manchester so one or the other of them might be able to manage it. If not I will write to them as you suggest. Would e-mail work just as well? Mel

Hi Melanie, I would suggest that you look at the trade directories. Central Library in Manchester have these on film for each of the census years that do not have a name index, such as 1861 and 1871. You will probably find his father in the 1871 directory and this will give you an address so that you can find him on the census. If you are not able to get there, they will probably have a look for you if you write to them and enclose a stamped and addresses envelope Mary

I received my cheque back today from Manchester Register office because the parents didn't match my criteria for the birth certificate I had sent off for. I was trying to find the birth of my grandfather's brother Joseph Jones so that I could get an address for 1871. I can't be sure of his mother's name but his father was also Joseph a corn dealer. Any suggestions as to what I should do now? I can't find my grandfather William because I don't know whether he was born in 1878 or 1874. I also can't be sure whether he was born in Salford or Manchester. His middle name might be Edward and his mother might be Margaret (no maiden name known) There are loads of William Joneses in Manchester and Salford born between 1874 and 1878. This family is causing me a real headache. Mel
