Does anybody know if it was possible to marry under the age of 21 if parents were not alive to give permission. My grandad got married on his 21 birthday as permission was not given but I am not sure either parent was alive, they must have been well over 60 if they were. Many thanks Ann

Sorry Ann but are you saying the parents were about 60 when the children were born?

Yes Robert , thanks, had a busy day at Myddleton House lugging those ledgers about. They would be 60 not 80 at the time of the marriage. Ann

My g grandmother married when she was 19. She was illegitimate and no father was mentioned on her birth or marriage certificate. Not sure what happenned to her mother but she either died or abandoned her. I have her marriage certificate and apart from three witness's names no mention is made of any consent. perhaps in reality it was only under 18 or 16 that got a consent signature? Penny
