Marcia, Sorry haven't managed to get to Hawley today, little one off sick. As the Hants records office only go back to 1723, have you tried contacting the church at Winslade to see if they kept hold of their records Apparently not all churches gave up their records, it might be worth ringing them. hi stan thanks for info, i,m grasping at straws for the moment, alot of bunches seem to be in the area, but because i,m not local to hampshire its difficult to get to records office, and i think it would be to much to ask someone to look, i may have to leave it for the time being marcie x

Hi, Marcia, I've just looked on the IGI. This record was submitted by a member of the LDS Church. Maybe they were in England only for a short time. I've noticed before that if they find a marriage in the records (in this case to Mary Searle in 1739), they have a habit of guessing that the person whose birth they can't find in the records came from that Parish, and was (say) 21, or 25, depending on their perception of marriage age. I have found more likely candidates in neighbouring Parishes, and by taking a wider range of possible ages. I conclude that anything that says 'born about xxxx' is to be taken with a very large pinch of salt, as the person may not have come from there at all, or might have been much older or much younger. I've even come across a case where they have picked on someone as the groom or bride when there was a better local candidate they had missed, so creating a marriage that never existed! If the Parish Records don't say the age, then be careful. If they don't say 'both of this Parish', or name the other Parish if only one of them comes from the place of the wedding, it may be reasonable to think they both came from that Parish, but not that they were both born there, even in the eighteenth century. Some early marriage registers do not even give the name of the father, so that is not always the answer either. In my short experience it pays to be thorough, and not to assume that hasty entries in IGI are right. Best wishes Stan

Marcia - have you tried the Hampshire Parish Records on line? It is not fully comprehensive, but there are certain areas where they have been transcribed, and perhaps the area you are looking for is amongst them. I just bang in Hants records and I think the link is Knightsure - they have a very good site and will also do lookups. Jacqui

hi shirley thanks for that, i have seen it, but when i e-mailed the hants record office they said they have records from 1723 only so i have no way of proving were he was born, i know that his marriage cert should show his parents names but i really need to prove his birth place, cannot think what to do marcie x
