Hello Kat, If you ring the Portsmouth Records office, they have the index for all pubs in the Portsmouth area, they also have a photo album of some of the pub fronts. Eileen in Portsmouth

Near the station? Sounds like a definite maybe! :) Will bear that in mind. I only know that it was 57 & 59 Commercial road in 1881 - but as you say, so much has been altered rrecently that to find out how the places were numbered back then is impossible! Best Wishes, -Kat

Judging from it's name it was probably near the railway station. I lived in Pompey in the 1970's, but when I went again last year, Commercial Road had been tarted up ie all the character removed, and the road from the old Unicorn Gate (to the Dockyard) which was lined with intriguing pubs - good for the odd jar on a Friday after work - had been cleared.

Thanks - but I tried to access the 'search' part of their site and it is unavaliable! Is it just my PC or is everyone having trouble with it? Take Care, -Kat

In 1881 my g-g-g-grandad was Brewery Keeper at the Great Western Beer House, 57 & 59 Commercial Rd, Portsmouth, Hants. Can anyone please tell me what happened to it or where I can find out? Also, does anyone know what is there now? Thank you for your time. -Kat
