Would the marriage witness names help to to locate them? I found what I believe to be the correct PARRY in 1881 using witnesses at her 1883 marriage to guide me. Her father too was shown as deceased on the marriage certificate.

Hi Helen, Frederick was a Ropehouse Boy at the Dockyard on 1881 in East Stonehouse. I have a copy of that entry in 1901 fo Burke according to Ellen's marriage cert, William was a Tailor! Debbie

Hi, Can't give you any advice whatsoever but was fascinated as St Georges Rd, Bristol sounded vaguely familar. So checked and my Gt Grandfather Alfred was born at number 23 St Georges Rd Bristol on 14 January 1876. They are living in Swindon from 1881 Census onwards. Sorry am not able to tell you anything though!! Sarah

Hi all, Sorry, I haven't been able to get back on the board, reeeally slow! Seems ok now. Joan Yes I did try the directories when I went to Bristol Record Office, some months ago. Didn't shed any light I'm afraid. Elaine, Just recently there was one death in 1897 in Bristol. Haven't sent away for it tho' I don't think it would help. I don't know anything about him. I had pondered on the Irish theme myself, many times, but again, until I can find him or Ellen on a census, I don't know where to start looking. Because I can't find them on the census' this is why I think they might be Irish. If they are, I won't find them! and round and round and............. Catch 22, chickens and eggs! I think I'm cornered. I have looked at Burke births for 1877 and a couple of years either side, but there are hundreds (and if she's Irish, it won't be there!) There was obviously quite an age gap between Ellen & Frederick he dropped 8yrs off his age when they married, so I doubt she was the 29yrs she claimed to be! Sorry, this all sounds so negative! If only post-1901 were easier. Debbie

Only 8 yrs to wait! I agree, will a future government deem it wrong for us to have such info. Was George Orwell right?!

Have you tried looking on free bmd for williams death ? maybe if you can find place of death it may be where the family was from. Or maybe find ellens birth cert. this may also have clues. Did they originate in Bristol? A lot of the searches on lds site came up with Irish birthplaces for Burke. elaine x

Have been trying to find more about Ellen Burke for months, the only obvious solution is the 1911 census. Can't wait that long. Would appreciate any suggestions, this is what I have, her Marriage cert dated 6 Nov 1906 Ellen Burke 29 Spinster 58 Great George St, Bristol, father William Burke deceased, Tailor Cannot find Ellen or her family on 1881, 1891, or 1901 census. Have checked that address on 1901 census, they were not living there then. She gives her age as 29, but I doubt that is correct! The groom gave his age a 33, searched for ages for his birth cert, found it - Oct 1865!!!! Their first child was born in Aug 1906, yes, that's right, born at 77 Avon St, Bath. Checked that on 1901, they were not living there either. Next child was born 1907 at 30 Gt George St, Bristol. The groom (Frederick William Essery) was from Stoke Damerel, sometime between 1907 & 1913 they settled back in Plymouth. Anyone have any ideas as to finding her family? The other bothersome thing, is that I only have FW Essery on 1881 census, not the next two. I have a nasty feeling when 1911 is available, they won't be on it! Debbie

It wouldn't surprise me if it were never released, on the grounds that the information might fall into the wrong hands and be mis-used.
