As you are in Hampshire how about going to the Record Office in Winchester. They are really helpful there and will show you how to look for the parish records of Litchfield. The 1901 census shows more than one DAY born there, now living in Newington.

Litchfield in Hampshire is just north of Whitchurch, off the A34. Jan.

Don't forget, when working out years of birth from ages given on the census, that the census was taken in March/April, so unless their birthdays were in the first quarter they were born 1 year earlier than you might have calculated. For instance, if the census says aged 2 in 1881, then unless they had already had their birthday their year of birth would have been 1878 - because they would be 3 later on in 1881. Jan.

Hi Amanda Is Hook in Litchfield because thats where they were in 1891 and one of the sons was born there. On Freebmd what got me confused was I thought I had found her and they had made a spelling mistake. It was Hoo but there is a Hoo in Kent so that wasnt her. so I think I am now looking in Hampshire. Thankyou very much Debbie

Debra, Well people did fib or give confused inocrrect information to census enumerators. I would take the 1891 place of birth as most likely to be acurate since it is nearer the birth date and the informant is more likely to be a parent in a position to know. Dont forget county and district boundries change, you need to look up eg GENUKI to see if the place was in a different district at the time you are looking for, and there can be more than one place with the same name. Children can have names added after registration eg when they are christened. Best of luck Pam

My Great Grandmother was born in 1889, In the 1901 census it says she was born in Teehfield Notts. But in the 1891 census it says she was born in Hook Hampshire. I have looked on Freebmd and found a Beatrice may Day born 1889 Hoo but have found out this place is in Kent and also my Beatrices middle name was Maud. so I dont think this could be the same one. I have searched 1837 again no luck. Please can someone put me in the right direction of where to go from here. Thank you Debbie
