A good idea to put names and dates. I have taken some photos recently of places my relatives used to live in - I've put the address on the back, plus who lived there and when and then the date I took the photo, plus my name and relationship to the people who lived there. I wonder where these photos will end up in the future?

Wish hubby had got some photo's - the earliest we've got is from his ID card when he was 15 and a baby sailor. He was orphaned few years before and any family papers/photos were lost - such a shame.

Rachel, The book I have is : A Directory of London Photographers 1841-1908 by Michael Pritchard. If you can get to the 'oldlondon' site on the web (sorry can't remember the addy) you can read extracts and contact the author direct . This is what I did. I sent an email and ordered the book. It arrived within the week. It is brilliant. I say this because it lists my Great Grandfather Robert Tucker and I feel really chuffed that his name is included in this publication. Viv

In my effort to find the identity of unnamed photos I have found there is a book published called the directory of London photographers in the 19th century - useful if you have studio portraits with no names. It is available on Amazon although there is a 5 week delivery so I am still waiting for my copy. My understanding is that it gives names, addresses & dates of photographers in london so helping you to give a rough date to photos and hopefully date them. Rachel

I have some photographs from family in Canada as well, but luckily, all the names are on the back. I have found an address as well, as it is nearly Christmas, a card should break the ice.

Did you know you can buy acid free pen(cil)s for writing on the back of photos? I saw them at a Family History Fair, but can't remember what stall. Maz. XX

Couldn't agree more Jim - I've had to e-mail Canada with descriptions of people on photos in my Mum's possession to try to find out who is who - time consuming and not necessarily correct info. coming back (unfortunately I cannot send photographs via e-mail as I do not have the equipment - a scanner is it?) Jacqui ps - did you get your e-mail re West Bridgford?

Hi, Good idea. And remember to write in pencil not pen because biro and ink eventually bleeds through to the front of the photograph. Gwynne

A topic was mentioned on the Member's Book which prompts me to put this here. Please, please, please. If you have any photographs write the details on the back Date photo taken & where. Names of subjects, It makes life so much easier for those who follow. There is nothing more annoying than coming across a raft of old rellies photos and being unable to identify them Jim
