Hello Kim Hmmm...sounds like grandparents, don't you think? Have you looked at any Sutherland deaths around the time Jane was born? Doesn't necessarily mean her mum was dead, though..... I had a similar case, though I was lucky....my rellie married the father of her illigitimate son, whose middle name was the fathers surname and the son was living with his mothers parents in 1841. What were Jane's children called? Any James' or Sarahs? Finding the death certs of James and Sarah might help? Also I noticed, with some of my early ancestors, I often didn't find their baptismal record, so either, I was looking at the wrong place, or the baptism wasn't registered.... Good luck! Tanya

Hello Tanya, Thanx for your ideas. 1841 census I,ve found 1 Jane Sutherland who would be 17yrs, right age, living in Northgate, Canterbury. This is the right parish. She is living with James Sutherland 75yrs & Sarah? Sutherland 68yrs. This means they would of been 58 & 51 yrs when she was born! What do you reckon parents or grandparents? Kim

Hi I'm Tanya from Wokingham...You've probably thought about it already, but what are the census returns like for 1841 & 1851 around Canterbury? Were you lucky enough to get an address in the marriage cert? Just a thought! Regards Tanya

god that is rubbish that in England, they only give fathers name on a marriage cert. That is no good.

no, there is the usual column for the father, just a line through Janes, the witnesses were Johns father and sister, and 2 people unknown to me., a William Sneller and Matilda Watson. I had kind of assumed they would of been frinds of the family. Kim

Siobhan - from my experience(not much!) the info you take from census returns e.g. is not always accurate, so not neccesarily born in Canterbury. Thanx Kim

Sheila, I think the illegitimacy theory is quite likely. There is no middle name and Jane is a very common name! Thanks Kim

could possibly be that Jane was illegitimate and no fathers name on her birth cert either - is there a middle name???? seems to be the norm that the fathers name was given as a clue I suppose as a middle name - se some of the other threads regarding this :-) She

I am searching for the parents of my g.grandmother. Her maiden name was Jane Sutherland b. 1824 in Canterbury according to 1881 & 1901 census returns, I have her marriage cert. to John Carter in 1846 but where her fathers name should be is a line? I had the baptism records for Northgate where I believe she may of been born searched but this came up negative. What shall I do next?
