Can anyone figure this out?

I don't know whether my brain is getting overloaded but I can't get my head around this and wondered if anyone had any ideas. I sent for the marriage certificate for my 2xgreat grandfather having found the reference on the Durham Records website. It showed him and two possible spouses, both with the same christian name, Jane Hudson or Jane Snaith. When the certificate arrived it showed the marriage on 9.11.1839 of Matthew Ferry,of full age, bachelor, and Jane Snaith,of full age, spinster. Matthew's father is shown as Matthew Ferry(wish they didn't keep using the same names over and over) Jane's father is shown as Robert Hudson. I have found a Jane Hudson born 24.10.1818, father Robert Hudson, mother Ann Robson. Also a Jane Snaith christening 27.9.1818, father Robert Snaith, mother Jane. Can you understand why I'm confused? Or am I just being extremely dim?

Hi Jackie, If I were you I'd write to the record office and get them to check. It certainly does seem weird. I had a situation recently where I gave them all the detail and the certificate issued was fine except for the father's christian name. Should have been William, shown as Charles. I queried it and asked them to check, they sent me a different certificate , where the only items that were correct were the fathers christian name, William, and occupation and the surnames. Everything else is completely wrong. I'm still trying to figure that one out, so they're obviously not infallible when it comes to issueing certificates. Good luck with them! Di.

Hi Jackie I can see why you are confused. Could it be that the names of the fathers have been transposed? Jane Snaith married Matthew Ferry and the next entry showed Jane Hudson marrying Whoever, the person writing out your certificate then copied the name of the father from the second entry by mistake? Or is that too simple? I am, of course, assuming that the certificate you received is handwritten and not a photocopy. As Diane has said, it would be advisable to query this with the Records Office. Mistakes seem to happen all the time. Good luck - hope you solve this mystery. Kathleen

Could Hudson or Snaith be her Stepfather's name. I'll explain one of my certificates and it wil show why I think this is possible. Name of Bride = Isabella Pitcher. Name of father = Harry Pitcher deceased. Now Pitcher was her birth name and no father was listed on her birth certificate. But she was brought up with the surname STEER and her stepfather's first name was Harry and he was deceased. So I think name of father was meant to be him. Also on the same certificate ( I have the original) one of the witnesses is listed as Dorothy STEER , and yet on the local register office fiche it is listed as Deborah STEER ( correct name for her mother). So you see how these mistakes can happen.

Hello Nina. The vicar possibly said 'and your fathers name' and she replied 'Harry' Vicar assumed the rest. ??? Keith
