Thank you very much Stan for you help and advice I will look on the 1837. It was a mistake on my part when i put down he was born in 1871 i did mean 1857 - it shows how easy it is to write down mistakes. Regards Roseanne

Hi, Roseanne I just checked the four quarters identified from the 1881 census age on 1837. If you look at it you will find there are 25 to 30 pages of TAY for each quarter. If you get three sections, two of one page each and one of say 29 pages between these, try about page 25 or 26 of the 29 for Thomas Taylor, then you won't waste too much time or money. If your Thomas was 82 at his death in January 1940, he should have been born between January 1857 and January 1858. It should follow that the best choice, bearing in mind the 1881 age, would be the Thomas born in the Jan-Mar 1857 quarter. I concede it could be one of the others, or perhaps if his birth was registered late it might have got into the Apr-Jun quarter of 1857. If he was born in 1871 he would be only 9 or 10 in 1881. He could not possibly be the 24-year-old with Edwin then. Even if he had lied about his age at a later date, he could not conceivably have passed for a grown man in 1881. I hope you find him without too many wasted certificates. Best wishes Stan

Thanks Stan My Thomas is just plain Thomas Taylor but i was wondering was there any more after the jan 1857 entry. If you did not check i will go onto 1837 because i think maybe he was born late 1871 if my calculations are right. Thank you again Roseanne

Hi Roseanne, The four entries I found were the only ones for Chorlton, unless I am going blind. I did mention however that I had counted only the plain Thomas Taylors, and had not looked at people with more than one Christian name, however. Regards Stan

Thank you Stan you have been a brilliant help. On Thomas's married certificate in 1884 he was 27, I cannot read the month but i think it may be the last quarter because of the age of his wife. Thomas died in jan 1940 aged 82 years. For some reason I have got Thomas's birthday down as the 31st August year? I do not know where this information came from and how accurate it is. It does look at though he may have been born around 1856/57. Are these the only entries for that time in Chorlton because ardwick did come under Chorlton. If so i will get in touch for a certificate search i have had a search for the last quarters of 1858/59. With the name being so popular you cannot have a search done for three years. Hi, Roseanne, I see that on the 1881 Census the Thomas Taylor living with Edwin was 24. If accurate, that would put his birth between Apr 1856 and Mar 1857. FreeBMD has not yet covered that information. However, I had a look on '1837'. I thought you might like to know that there were 124 Thomas Taylors born in that period, not counting the ones with extra Christian names. I thought the most likely registration area might be Chorlton. There seems to be none from other parts of present-day Manchester, although there are some from Ashton. The Chorlton entries for that period are: Apr-Jun 1856: Chorlton 8c 544; Jul-Sep 1856: Chorlton 8c 541; Oct-Dec 1856: Chorlton 8c 495; Jan-Mar 1857: Chorlton 8c 580. I don't know whether this will be any help, but I hope you manage to make some progress. Best wishes Stan

I am trying to find Thomas Taylor born around 1858 in Ardwick, Manchester. I have sent for two birth certificates but they are the wrong ones. I have found Thomas on the 1881 census living with his brother Edwin in Fenwick street hulme, manchester. I have Thomas's wedding certificate stating his father was called john and he was living 7 Geoffrey Street, chorlton on medlock. I have found him on the 1901 census living at chatham street manchester. I know i really need to view the 1861 census but find it difficult to get into manchester with work. Anybody else have trouble with the Taylor's from Manchester? I would like to hear from you Roseanne
