I am trying to find birth details of my great great grandfather George Henry Kneller. He was born circa 1841 in Portsmouth. I have his marriage certificates (he was married twice), and I have found him on the '81, '91 and 1901 censuses. The ages given on the censuses tally up with the birth year of around 1841 and Portsmouth is given as the place of birth, BUT I cannot find any proof of his birth!? I have tried the GRO at Southport with them searching from 1837 to 1845 and I been to the record office here in Portsmouth but had no luck. Can anyone help or offer advice please? Thanks

Hi, It's possible his parents weren't married and he was registered in his mother's maiden name. Does he have any siblings that you have found in the GRO? If you get one of their birth certs that would give you his mother's maiden name - then you could see if he was registered under that name. In the early years some babies went unregistered. I have my gt gt grandfather's baptism in 1839 but not his birth as it wasn't registered. Hope this helps, Gwynne

Hi Gwynne, Thanks for the reply. I have found a George Kneller that was born in 1811 and who married a Rebecca Newton in Portsmouth in 1834, so there is the possibilty that these are his parents, I have checked the records office for them and confirmed their marriage date but again, no confirmation of my guy or in fact any children borne to them.
