On the photo copy of the original cert John Day married Hannah Malpas (1 s) June 1871 written by the same person John Day ....x his mark Emma Malpass (2 S's)....x her mark ( Yes Emma!!) Neither of the two witnesses could write their names so no one noticed the mistake Anne

Even when all the names tally, there can be differences in names on different certificates for the same person. As the parties were illiterate, the registrar simply wrote what he heard. The same happened in censuses, if they couldn`t read, there was no way they could check. On our modern censuses, everyone received a form to fill in, back then, the enumerator went from house to house knocking on doors.

I have my grandfathers birth certificate, inherited from my mum. This was obtained in 1929, his name is stated as Ball, but on the index it is Balls. I think that grandmother may have had something to do with that.
