On the 1881 census there is James GEORGE Head M Male 41 Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk, On the 1851 census there is James GEORGE Son 11 M Scholar Winterton-NFK I have found out that Winterton is about 8 miles from Gt Yarmouth. So, would these 2 James be one and the same? Any thoughts please

Carol: It very well could be the same person, but James George was a popular name, according to the IGI. I would follow your leads, but not feel "safe" unless I had more proof. I have the same problem with my James Mumford. There were quite a few of them running around Essex. Wish we could snap our fingers and proof would suddenly appear. Good luck.

At least, with an 1840 birthdate, I can get a birth certificate, or check how many James Georges there are in the area. I dont like to guess, census is fine for finding leads, but then I always like to follow them up and prove or disprove my initial hypothesis. Thanks for your input.

Hi Carol checked on Norfolk transcription site--Winterton is in Flegg district--so don't think this is the right James George, according to 1871 census-the one born in Winterton is a 2nd class police constable (whatever one of those is!) The one that married Mary Ann Welch on 1881 census (fisherman) married a Hannah Goose in 1866 in Yarmouth--a Hannah George died in Yarmouth in 1878 aged 37--and James George married Mary Ann Welch in Yarmouth in 1880,according to BMD Hopes this helps Rod

Regarding my message (above) -- I've found three James Mumfords born in 1826, all within the same area. The least my James could have done was use his middle name as well, like he did when he went to Canada! :~)
