Hi I recently recieved a death certificate which mentioned a coroners report of the death. Does anyone know if it possible to find out further information on such a death and where? It mentions the date of the inquest and the name of the coroner. Thanks for any help Richard

You don't say how long ago this happened. I tried to get a copy of the Coroner's report on my gt grandfather's death in 1880, and was told that all records before 1892 had been destroyed. So near, and yet so far. Jan

There is a 75 year closure for these records, so you should be OK with that one. Contact the archives for the county concerned.

As mentioned, a lot of these records don't survive. However, contact the relevant County Record Office and ask. Also don't forget that inquests are/were often reported in the local rag - ask the CRO about that too. Also I have 'a little book' about local newspapers, so let me know what area and I will see what it says. Maz. XX

Thanks for everyones help. The district on the certificate is N. Bierley - which is now Bradford district. The person concerned died in Thornton, Bradford. Most of my certificates mention N. Bierley but I have obtained the ceritificates from the Bradford Register Office, Manor Row.

Maz I've had a similar problem in trying to fidn out about the inquest into my gggrandfather's death in Camberwell in 1865. I wrote to Coroner for that area and had a very nice letter back saying that they only had limited files relating to this date and my gggrandfather's details were unfortunately no longer there. I've been wanted to find out if anythingh was put in the local paper. Have you any idea which paper would have covered the Camberwell area of Surrey?

Richard - Listings I have for Bradford local papers as follows (but this may not be complete as my book is really only up to 1920 but shows 1920+ for the ones I have included) Bradford/Yorkshire Observer (daily) - Keighley Library (the) Yorkshireman, Bradford Daily Argus, Kemp's Yorkshire Gazette, Bradford Pioneer - Bradford Central Library Linda - struggling to find a listing for 1865 in Camberwell, seems to start from 1870. Have you got the death cert with more specific address of either the death, reg district or coroners office? Maz. XX

Hi Maz The sub-district is just given as Camberwell. There is an a road mentioned on the death certificate, but it's hard to read. Maybe Grosvenor Square? It's definitely something Square...! The inquest was held on 28/11/1865 and my gggrandfather's name was Isaac Walter Acland.

Hi Linda. One of the problems is that although it was in Surrey then, it is in London now! Lots of places like that. Best suggestion is to try and contact Southwark Local Studies Library and/or the Lambeth Archives, Minet Library. Sorry but contact info is not provided! If not, then try the British Library - believe you need the bit in Colindale. If they haven't got it, they will know who has. Good luck. Maz. XX
