legal age to get married

could someone tell me what the legal age to get married was in the 1800s.

Hi, 12 for girls and 14 for boys. It was, however, unusual to marry that young and parental permission was required. The "average" age to marry was late teens early twenties (women) and early to mid twenties for men. Hope this helps, Gwynne

Any person marrying over the age of 21 will normally be listed as 'of full age'. bob

Hi Jackie, If it was Scotland it always list their ages - even up to today. Regards Margaret
