Joan All the marriage certificates that I have give a fathers name both forename and surname. Although I suppose it would depend on the what the registrar wanted to put Out of curiosity, what does it have for the wife's father? It just a forename, or a surname as well? Rachel

Georgina, I've one family where they seem to put their brother's name instead of father's!! Not just once but every time....so frustrating!

Hi Joan, I had a look on the Pallots entries on ancestry for William Kirklands married in Derby (central not suburbs) found: Wm Kirkland m Eliz. Banks - Derby 1816 Wm Kirkland m Martha Barker - Derby 1798 Wm Kirkland m Anne Herrop - Derby 1808 Wm Kirland m Mary Shorterst - Derby 1794 It's possible that your William is a late child of a couple of them. Emma.

Hi, The father's forename and surname are usually given on marriage certs. Did the one you have just have "William" in the space for father? Illegitimate children sometimes invented fathers on marriage certs - is this a possibility in this case? Gwynne

If the parents were married then the fathers surname would be the same as the person getting married. Tricia

Just a thought if on a Marriage Cert The fathers name is given does it have to be the Surname of the person getting married for instance William Kirkland married 1861 father William has it got to be Kirkland, or could the mother have been Kirkland and father William ?? Does the above make sense ? as I cannot find Williams father Joan
