1891 reading problem.

Rosi, There is a village called Souldern in Oxfordshire near where I live but don't know of a Salden - unless this is the olde worlde spelling. Kathy

If I'm not certain of a name or an age, I check what I see against what the transcriber saw. Sometimes his/her idea is better than mine (though not always). Before opening a census sheet, make a note of the RG no, the Folio and Page no. Then if you need to check anything, go back to the Search page, delete all the other information except for surname, and just put in the numbers you have copied down. When you click on Search, you will have a new index just showing all the people with that surname from that census sheet, listing their names, ages, places of birth and where they are living. I've often found this a great help in deciphering difficult writing. Jan.

Hi It's definitely William, shortened to Wm, they did this a lot - also things like Jas for James, Geo for George, Hy for Henry etc. Salden is not far from Buckingham .. it DOES exist. Best wishes A

Thanks for looking Lynda, I hadn't thought of Ian, Tom is a possible, but in those days i think most Toms were called Thomas weren't they? I know of no place in the Oxford area that resembles what appears to be written either, and similarly for the baby Emily on the next page, who was born 'somewhere' Leigh. Thankyou again, Rosi

Looks as if it is Wm short for William Elizabeth was born in Salden? Oxford -also her age looks like 39 or 37 and the youngest child on the 2nd page - Emily was born in Leigh Essex which is were they are for the census hope this helps michele in surrey

Rosi It is hard to read, the second name looks like Tom or Ian. as for where Elizabeth was born it is Oxford I think and again it looks something like Saldim or Saliss, sorry can't be of better help. Lynda

Hallo. I think I've found the right family on the 1891 - but I cannot read some of it - please can anyone help. The entry is for Henry Snow and his wife Elizabeth and their 6 children, (one of them also Henry), living in Hadleigh, Essex. He is 35 and she is 29 I think. What I cannot read is his second Christian name, where Elizabeth was born, I think the second bit says Oxford, and also where the youngest child was born - you have to go to the next page for her tho. Any help much appreciated. Rosi
