Hi Helen, I joined Lancashire and Essex History Societies but they both list all your surname interests with the different Counties so I think I could have got away with joining just one. I suppose if you want details of the history of a certain area you need the society for that county. Maggie

Hi, The joy of FHSs is the "members' interests". In my first 6 months of memberships of Suffolk FHS I found more connections and cousins than I have anywhere else - even on the Rootsweb lists and I've found loads there. It's worth joining for a year just to have your ancestors' names put it the quarterly magazine. FHSs have lists of baptisms, marriages and burials, and many other resources available to members. You can also get involved in transcribing data for them - census indexes, school rolls etc. If you join a local group you will meet experienced genealogists who will help and advise those just starting out. Another bonus is you pay less for census CDs and indexes as a member than as a "stranger". Gwynne Suffolk FHS Gwent FHS Somerset and Dorset FHS Powys FHS Tyrrell Society Shropshire FHS Warwickshire FHS

You could also try www(.)familyhistoryonline(.)org, some family history societies have put some of their transcribes on there. It is a matter of luck though if your area is covered or not! There is a map on the home page showing whats covered and what isn't. Another site is www(.)ffhs(.)co(.)uk (i think or it might be com!). This site pretends to be a big hall with stands for each of the fhs. I've found it be really helpful. Good luck with your search! Rachel

Go to google then advanced. Type family history society in the box for exact phrase You will get a lot. I have joined quite a few FHS, as mine is spread all over the country. They are usually about £10 to £15 per year and you get some lovely magazines.

Is there a list of these and do I have to join loads as my family seem to have wandered from one end of the country to the other?
