As stated before, the father had to give consent. My father in law`s birth certificate has a blank where father should be. Haven`t found any illegitimate ones on my side, but a few close ones, where parents married 3 months or so before birth of first child.

My great grandfather was illegitimate. There is no father's name on his birth certificate and his mother married about 18 months after he was born. Great grandfather's marriage certificate has the father named as Henry Gerrard, Packer. His mother's maiden name was Gerrard which was the name he was registered under and her husband was Henry Moore, occupation Packer. Don't know whether the name was put in to make it look right or someone put Gerrard by mistake because he was male and so they expected the father's name to be Gerrard too. Mel

As Gwynneth says above applied from 1875. So if he could not attend or agree he could not be named. It's worth checking the childs later marriage certificate if possible as the true father can be named, even if dead, I think. Although names might be altered to make things look right.

I am also waiting to see. My dad was adopted and have managed to track down his birth cert under the name he was given by his birth mother. Searched two years either side of his birthdate and found nothing when 1837 first came online, went back to the site this weekend after seeing it had been re-indexed and lo and behold there he was in the 2nd quarter of the year. Fingers crossed

Hi, If the couple are unmarried then the father's name space is always left blank UNLESS the father goes with the mother to register the child and consents to his name being entered. Gwynne

It is up to the mother as to whether she puts the name of the father in the registration of the birth. One of my rellies was illeg. and the "Father" space is blank.
