Found this in one of my old family tree books ,makes you wonder who's really bonkers us or them! It isnt necessarily true because Auntie Maggie said it It isnt necessarily a lie because Uncle Bert said it Polly (or Molly) is Mary Anne (or Mary) Sally or (rarely) Sadie is Sarah Tillie or Mattie is Matilda Nellie is Ellen or Eleanor or Helen Patty (or Matty) is Martha, not Patricia till 1920 plus Peggy or Meg or Maggie or Molly is Margaret - so is Greta sometimes Jenny or Jinny is Jane or Joan or Janet Fred is Frederick or Alfred Bert is Albert or Herbert or Robert - Bertie is Bertram Lal is lawrence or Albert' Loll lowry Larry is lawrence too Bessie Lizzie Libby Betty beth Liza is Elizabeth (or Eliza) Nora might be Eleanora or Honora Nancy is Ann Dolly is Dorothy so is Dora and Dory but only sometimes Cissie might be Cicely but is usually sister so could be anything! Nip(per). Kid(da) - general term for old Woman Bessie - (Elizabeth) but general term for interfering old woman Help Im off for a cup of tea and a sit down in a darkened room
