US Census versus UK Census

It's true we're so well documented nowadays that if someone wants to find out about us they can. There are ads on some web sites where you can have a check done on anyones background. So I really don't see the point on withholding the census information. Just another little bit of government control they don't want to let go of. As I was born in 1931 I guess the first census I'll appear on will be the 1951, and I can't see any possible harm it could do me for someone to find out any of the information about me available on that, at this late date. Even the 2001 one here doesn't exactly hold any info I'd want hidden from public view. Di. |

As I understand it, it was only the later censuses that were subject to the 100 year rule and not the earlier ones, they just seem to have extended the rules. Someone somewhere may know the full facts. Unfortunately Siobhan you will have to wait until 2022 to see the 1921 census, and then 2052 for the next one. The 1931 returns were destroyed by German bombing and they didn't take one in 1941, but there are some other records taken during the war that will be released, without looking it up I can't remeber the full details. Annoyingly most of the 1890 US census was destroyed by fire and that is one I would have liked to look at. Ros |

I also think that uk census material should be free to view. After all with technology as it is today, its already pretty easy to find someones address or phonenumber. If it doesn't upset the Americans (who we know will drop a lawsuit on almost anything ) What harm can be done when viewing uk data from 80 years ago? Lets hope, in the future people can have an option to withold their census information only if they choose to for 100 years. e x |

Information from a UK Census is not made public for 100 years. That is British law. Sorry. Jan. |

How comes the US are able to view up to 1921 census and the UK are not........the UK 1921 census would help me alot with tracing my family. But I dunno if i have the patience to wait until 2021. What does everyone else think??? I can understand the relevance in this in case some of the people are still alive it would be confidential information, but if we can prove they have now passed away we should surely be allowed access. |
