Hi Kathy, The site is scotlandspeople(.)gov(.)uk. It's a really good site and well worth the money. You need to spend £6 for 30 credits. A search costs 1 credit per 25 entries and a certificate costs 5 credits. You can also view the 1881, 1891 1901 census which I haven't found on any other site. I do have the 1881 census and will be happy to do look ups for you. Let me know if you need more help. Regards Margaret

Hi Margaret, Would appreciate the website for the Edinburgh records office as I'm just about to commence my husband's family tree. His father would have been born either in Glasgow or South Africa but would have been married in Glasgow anyway. (Nobody liked him much so they didnt take much notice of these things!!) If I can download certificates as you say, that would be a great saving. Kathy

Hi Richard, Thought someone might be interested in the cost of Scottish certificates. I pay 50p for historical statutory records if I do my own search at the Edinburgh records office and £1 if I download it from their web site. These are quite different from old parish records, much more informative. Regards Margaret

Hi Richard, I think the 50p certificates you refer to are for copies of old Parish Register documents i.e., pre-1837, which may be obtainable from a library local to the event where parish records are kept on microfilm. The normal price for a certificate from the local Register Office is £7 or £8 from the GRO. Let me know if you hear otherwise!!

I think you will find that what they are talking about are copies of Parish Records of baptisms, marriages and burials. Sometimes the baptismal record will contain a date of birth - most later ones do, but in earlier ones it depended on the person filling it in, often in the margin. Burial records rarely contain the date of death. Stan

Hi I have seen a few people mention it is possible to get copies of old BMD certificates for '50p' or £1 at their library or register office. I have used Bradford and Stroud Register office and the GRO people in Liverpool and been charged £7 each time. Am I paying more than I need to? Do other people around Bradford get their certificate copies in a different way ie. cheaper! THanks Richard
