Susan - that thought had crossed my muddled mind - given the number of Charles and Emma Carters (hundreds!!) I was hoping that they were still alive and well if only to make searching census's easier. S.

Are you sitting comfortably - then I'll begin... In 1901 I have a William Carter born Kingston Surrey age 30 He is married to Winnifred also age 30 - living in Withyham Sx. They appear as CASTER not Carter. I have what i beleive to be Williams birth cert - I could only find one William born Kingston 1871 I looked a few years either side to make sure! No others in Surrey. Birth cert gives father Charles Joseph licencsed victualler - mother Emma formerly Gurney. I have a marriage for Charles and Emma in Surbiton, Surrey and I aso have four more children - baptised in Surbiton, same parents, same day as my William - they are Charles born 1866 Edwin born 1867 Mary Jane Susannah born 1869 Emma Elizabeth 1873. Now my question is where are they??? I think I have Edwin in 1881 on a Dairy Farm in Wimbledon. As he is only 14 I don't expect to find his older brother - but where are the rest of them? I would have been quite happy except that I have found a Charles Carter driver of stagecoach!! with wife Emma son James W age 9 and an Emma age 7 (only one year out and name back to front) I would have expected to see Mary Jane 12 and Emma 8 although you make allowances for them away visiting! My problem is that I cant prove that these are not mine - i've tried to check them out and it's driving me nuts. What do you think ?? Should I just forget about this family ?? and should I just accept that mine were left off the census for some reason ?? I would appreciate your thoughts........... Sue.
