Just tried again on the 1901 census. Grandfather`s birth certificate gives me an address, but it is ticked as in occupation, but nobody is listed. Grandfather wasn`t born until November 1901, but I thought they would be living there. How do I find out where they have gone. Done a name search, but nothing.

Hi Carol, I am having a similar problem. My gr grandparents were married in 1906 and the marriage certificate says they were living at 19 Conway St. The marriage was in Salford so I assumed that was where the address was but I can't find it on the 1901 Census. There were two Conway Streets, one unoccupied and the other in Ormskirk. I checked that but no Hadfield or Quayle there. Gr grandfather Joseph Hadfield would have been about 22 in 1901 and he was a shoemaker. Can't find him. Maud Mary Quayle would have been about 23. Can't find her either. Searched for his father also a shoemaker named Charles and wouldn't you know it, my voucher credit ran out before I could view the one I found. It said he was 55 and living in Manchester. Hoped I might find his son living with him. These ancestors don't make life easy do they? I did find her on the 1881 living in Cheetham, Manchester. Mel

Hi Carol, What about trying the address from 1891 and see who is living there? Sorry that's all I can think of. Laurie

Hi Carol, There are such things as Rate Books which were kept by many town. They generally give the occupants of houses, giving their names and the rent they pay. Where they survive you should be able to locate them in the CRO or local Reference Library. Mary

Thanks Deborah, maybe it needs a fresh pair of eyes. I couldn`t find anything on the 1891 or 1881 either. Charles Frederick Ball and wife Annie Ball Mum told me grandfather had an older brother and sister, brother Charles and sister Daisy or Gertrude, (mum couldn`t remember which) Charles Frederick Ball is listed as fisherman on grandfathers birth certificate, so could have been at sea when the census took place.

Thanks Mary, I will give that a try. The address is in Hull, Yorkshire and I am in Plymouth. Maybe the Hull website could help.

No problem Bren, I have done the same thing myself before now. I even asked for a census look up while on an auction sites forum. That confused everyone.

Hi William, Brenda found Conway St in Salford for me on the 1891 but it wasn't the right family. I am looking for Joseph Hadfield and/or Maud Mary Quayle in the 1901. They got married in 1906 and were both living in Conway St at the time. The marriage was in Salford so I assume the Conway St I need is in Salford. I couldn't find it in 1901 and now I need to get some more credit before I can do anymore searches. I found Joseph's father Charles, a shoemaker, age 55 in Manchester but couldn't look at the image as I had run out of credit by then. Thanks for the information anyway. Mel

Hi there (Message for Melanie) Using the 1901 census decoder (sorry I haven't got any credits) found this family with consecutive ID numbers. Charles Hadfield 55, born Manchester, Shoemaker Elizabeth Hadfield, 55 born Manchester JOSEPH HADFIELD, 21, born Manchester, Telephone Fitter Levi Hadfield, 14, born Manchester, Textile Machine Maker Fitter Elizabeth Hadfield, 11, born Manchester. Looks like these are yours. Beg a look up from some kind soul with 1901 credits!! Best wishes, Carol

Thank you Carol. Yes these are mine. My mum told me that her grandfather had a brother called Levi. I don't suppose it was a really common name so it must be right. Joseph was down as a shoemaker when he got married in 1906 so he must have changed his occupation for some reason. I don't know how the decoder works to be honest but the details you have given me should be enough for me to pursue this family line further. Thanks again. Mel.
