Thanks for the mariners web address, Patricia. I have checked this out but do you know if the info is available online? I can't see me ever getting down to London. Lilian

Yes, Gen, I'm looking for William John Lindon. He was a mariner when he married age in Liverpool in 1882. I can't find him in the 1881 census so I assume he was at sea. All I know is that he was born about 1858 and his father was John. I can't find him anywhere else. He wasn't registered so I don't know for sure if he was born in Liverpool. His wife remarried in 1891 but I can't find his death. Either he died at sea or he did a flit and she married bigamously. If I could find him in a census, at least I'd know where he was born. Can you help? Lilian

I was told there is a separate surname index of seamen who were on board ships in British ports or in British waters on the night of the 1881 census. Is this correct? If so, please tell me where can I access the details? Lilian
