Oh my goodness Elaine you are a star! I scrolled down the list and found the marriage of George and Elizabeth Mary Catling Mead! Incredibly they were married for 15 years before Edward came along in 1860. I mean I knew they were Edwards parents already as above. But I had not even started to look for their marriage! Many thanks! As to the hall keeper, the mind boggles! Edward was a cooper in 1901 and when his son George married he was a dental mechanic! My cousin gave me a scan of a photo of him in the thirties, he was blind by then, an accident at work. this is great thank you so much!

Hi, Just another suggestion about a hall keeper. Were they not the people who, in houses with lots of servants, sat in a high-backed chair near the door? Their duties were to answer the front door, and show in guests (or turn away unwanted guests). You would probably need 20 or more servants before division of labour could be carried that far. Stan

Carol - yes you are probably right but its so inconsiderate of them not to be there!! Mary, I wrote Carter?? as I cannot make out what it says on 1891 census. When Edward married in 1898, his dad was listed as deceased, and a wire drawer, which was quite a skilled job. Edward was by then a cooper so who knows how that came from him benig a hall keeper!! Crista, Edward was single when he married in 1898 so I think he may have been with his father in 1881, he certainly was in 1891. No idea whenElizabeth Mary died unfortunately just that she was dead by 1891. Donna, yes its quite probable they spelled it wrong! It would be just my luck! Elaine, thats quite a coincidence isn;t it! Are St Giles and St Anne close? Where did you find the reference? Thanks everyone for your help! Barbara

The names may have been written wrong I have this on 1881 and 1901 the luck was on my side it only took me two days to find them I went through national search name by name....... one of the mistakes was Renzia and she should have been Kenzia on the 1881 instead of Trickey it read Hickey good luck

Barbara, Are you expecting Edward and George to be in the same house? Also, was Elizabeth alive then? Crista

There were bound to be some who got missed Recently moved, so enumerator thought house still empty. They didn`t hear him knock They thought he was the rent/insurance man and didn`t answer. They went away, and arrived somewhere else after the enumerator had been. Just think how many people must have got missed in the 2001 census.
