Hi Stewart You need to be able to get back to someone on the 1901 census. If you havn't got back that far yet, you will need to look at parish records to find births , deaths and marriages, and then obtain the necessary certificates. Once you get back as far as 1901 you can find your ascendants on there, and then move back to 1881 , and so on. If there is a specific query, post as much info as you can, names, dates, places etc.. and the folk on here will try and help as much as they can. Regards Maxine

Stewart, Take it step by step. Did your dad have older siblings? If so you can get an idea of whenabouts your grandparents married. Then you need to get the info and buy the certificate. This will give you their ages and their father's names. Once you have their ages you can look for the details and apply for their birth certificates and so on back as far as 1837. Good luck, jim

Hello Stewart always give some dates or approximates when you make an enquiry so we can best advise you. There is a Martha Stewart age 20 on the 1901 census living in Kirky in Ashfield, occupation Hosiery Seamer. It looks like she is living with parents John and Elizabeth and family. She might be yours. What was John Thomas's occupation? There are several candidates on the 1901. Sue
