Hi Pat, which census is that?

Annie

Annie Report 9 Oct 2003 15:32

Just in case it helps, my gg grandfather was a Chef and was working in a hotel the night of the census, so his wife was marked as Head at the family home. It took me ages to find him because I KNEW he wasn't dead at the time. Ann

Tony, Have you got any of the other children's marriage certificates? If you haven't I would check out his name on those first. I spent months looking for a my gg grandfather whose name on his son's marriage certificate was Frederick. Eventually found him and his name was David William!! David had a son Frederick so guess someone got confused. Emma.

Hi there Thomas I have a similar situation with my great great grandfather, his wife and family are on the 1881 census in Shrewsbury, with her listed as head, and married, and I can't find her husband. I am pretty sure that he was working away, and may even have been travelling, as he was there for his daughters wedding in South Wales in 1892. I would suggest going to your local family history centre or records office and see if you can find him on an earlier census (1871 or 1851 have a name index which helps a huge amount). I have found other missing rellies this way (I have yet to tackle the Shrewsbury ones, as I have to make a trip to Shrewsbury and havn't got around to it yet!) Regards Maxine (sorry - just noticed you are waiting for the 1871 - I'm sure that will help)

Hello Thomas, Hi Christa. It could be that he was at sea that night, or some other simple explanation? Keith

Thomas

Thomas Report 8 Oct 2003 11:35

Hi Christa, yes I had'nt noticed that but she is still shown as married not widow, however I shall look a bit further back next time I go to FHS. I cant find his death on freeBMD at all. Regards Tony

Tony, Eliza as listed as Head and not Wife on the 1881 census. Makes me think he had already died by then. Crista

Thomas Report 8 Oct 2003 10:39

Trying to find Edward James Vanner, the only trace of his existence is his name on sons marriage cert in 1894.I've found the rest of the family in 1881 in Gateshead Co Durham where they must have moved to in 1872 from the Bethnal Green,Walworth area going from the reg of children, one in Dec Qtr 1871 at St Saviour and the next at Gateshead in Dec Qtr 1872. On the 1881 census(they are mis-transcribed as Danver)there is no sign of the father and after trying all combinations of name that I can think of I've been unable to locate him at all. Cant find any marriage to Eliza and by 1891 census she is down as a widow, but I cant find a death reg for him. I've been at this wall for a couple of months now and it's rapidly driving me up it! I ordered the 1871 census from Sunderland FHC three weeks ago but no word yet.Any ideas welcome,Regards Tony.
