Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 3 Oct 2003 18:01

Jane D's father, David, has a sister Mary D. Mary T's father, William, has a brother James. Mary D and James are married to each other. What relation is Mary T to Jane D? The nearest I can get to it without my FamilyTree Maker is maybe cousins-in-law?? Mary T looked after Jane after David died. Thanks anyone whose brain is still working on a Friday evening. Maz. XX

Not surprised - I have been pickled for a week on this. Just realised that despite my spacing it all out beautifully so it was easier to understand, blimmin GC has lumped it all together in 1 paragraph! Typical ... Maz. XX

Jacqui Report 3 Oct 2003 18:18

After two large reds the answer is: they are first cousins who married!! At least I thinks so............... Jacqui or possibly not....... why do they have to be related at all? It could be that David D and William T were friends and after David's death, Mary D (who then became Mary T) merely looked after her neice Jane D after the death of her brother, David D. Makes sense? Jacqui

According to mine, they are not related. My programme only does blood relatives, not those related by marriage

Hi Maz I agree with you and think they are cousins-in-law. They were both nieces of Mary and James, but only related (?) by marriage. That's the best I can do on a Friday evening! Sue at Langley Vale

Now Jacqui, what could be more pressing than looking at the lovely men, getting all the girlie gossip, then stuffing chinese food down like there's no tomorrow?? :))) Got some in the fridge as well, just in case!!

I have been trying to work this one out for ages and now am sitting is a sea of paper and still no further forward, in frustration I typed in 'what is a first cousin twice removed' and to my surprise Genealogy.com have a page with just that name, it does not mention in laws but it has made sense of some of my relatives who seem to be a tad incestuous in their relationships. Just had another look now I've sobered up and I'm still confused! I am inclined to go for cousins in law too though as they are only related by marriage Jeanette x
