I received the marriage certificate this morning for Samuel MARTIN and Joanna MOSS married in Plymouth, Devon in 1861 Samuel`s father is stated as Faithful MARTIN, and his occupation as a miller. I can`t find him on the 1851 Devon census. I can understand not finding Samuel, as he was in the Royal Marines, and could have been at sea. Any suggestions please?

Hi, As the groom was a sailor he may not have been from Devon at all and have married a local girl. His father could be anywhere. Gwynne

Thanks for that, both I never thought of looking on the IGI. It had occurred to me about a different surname and not coming from Plymouth. Mother in law however insists that all her family were from Plymouth, but she hasnt gone that far back.

Thanks April, the area is right, and the dates are probable, so that could be a possibility. At least it gives me something to go on and something to verify.

Thanks Georgina, I use the 1881 census, but when I used the IGI years ago, it always seemed to be full of foreigners. It has certainly expanded now, I shall have to check it more often. From his marriage certificate Samuel should be born 1830, but variations can happen.
