If you are unable to come up with various churches, let me know what religion they were and I can try (maybe it might be easier if done in the U.S.?). Also, didn't read your other reply closely, so didn't answer your question, sorry. People (in California at least) tend to move around fairly often. Two of our neighbours have lived "here" for 50 years; however, that is not typical of Californians. I would be surprised if your relatives stayed in one place. HOWEVER, Pennsylvania has some very old (for U.S.) settlements, so there is the chance that they are still in the same area. I am looking for ancestors in Sussex and Essex. I wrote to a church in Shipley and asked if there were any parishioners with the last name of Vaus. The pastor(?) was kind enough to look in the telephone directory and gave me Vaus names and addresses. Perhaps you might try this as well. Please let me know if I can help any more. Lisa.

A few years ago I checked out that site and found a couple of payments that my dad never received. You might check out the State Controller's Office for Pennsylvania -- if any of your relatives were owed money, the information would be there, as well as the town they lived in. Good luck. Have you tried the IGI on the familysearch site? IGI = International Genealogical Index. When you looked at the census, there is a link on the left hand side.

Marion, Good Luck with yours too!!! Christa, You are a gem, I will check that out. Lisa, I do have a lot of info on this family but only up to the 1920's. My G G Uncle was taken to the States in 1821 I think. The family were living in Mt, Carmel, Northumberland, Pennsylvania in 1880 and his son was still there in 1923. I do have the full address. Is it worth writing a letter there to see if anyone has any recollection. Any help is gratefully received. Allie

Hi Allie. I live in the U.S., but as my family is from Canada, England or Ireland I've never looked for American records. If you know what part of the country they lived in, I can try and find some sites for you. I find it very confusing to search for my ancestors when counties, neighbouring towns, etc. are mentioned -- at least I might have heard of your ancestor's area which may may the process easier. I have a GGrandfather who came over from America between 1881 and 1891 and have absolutely no idea which part of the States. There is nothing on marriage or death certs. and he must have arrived too early for the Ellis Island passenger list. I have hit a brick wall and am now hoping to track down a will from the Probate and Copies Dept. in the hope there may be some clues. Good luck with your search. Marion

Can anyone please tell me if there are any sites where I can search for my late american rellies. I have found them on the 1880 census but cant seem to find any info since as I'm not sure where to look. Many thanks in advance! Allie.
