A number of PC and family history magazines have free software packages with them. Try a few and see which suits you. Bob

I'm afraid I haven't got one - file that is - which one should I get? I think tere is one for sale in my library for £9.99 is that good enough or do I need something more sophisticated? Bearing in mind I didn't know what a gedcom was - I thought it was something out of Dr Who or Return of the Jedi!!! I usually just write my files up, detailing each particular section of the family as and when I get further info on each individual. Jacqui

A GEDCOM is the way your family tree package can store the information so that it can be sent to other packages. The way to save a gedcom file is usualy through the 'save as' function under 'file' but look at the manual or help that comes with your program.

Diane - when you find out please explain to me - I wouldn't know a gedcom if it bit me, but everyone else seems to understand what it is and why we seems to need it. I think it is probably some sort of software you buy to help you write down the family tree as it emerges from your research, however I don't know where to get one from. Is there a Gedcom shop?? No doubt someone will put us wise. Jacqui

Hi Diane Created by your existing software package. Instructions should be in the help section somewhere. Debbie
