Anyone know what at "Higglar" did?

Thanks for taking the time to look up "Higglar/Higgler" for me. I have since found out that the lady concerned was actually wife number 3 of my great great great grandfather, so no actual blood relative. I think he didn't like being on his own! He was a tailor, so me probably married wife no. 3 to sell his wares! Regards Maxine

Hi! I'm new to all this, but Webster's 1828 dictionary lists a "Hig'gler" as one who carries about provisions for sale - one who chaffers in bargaining! Sounds like a travelling salesman to me! Eleanor

From my book Higgler.....Pedlar, usually with a horse and cart (Also called a haggler. The word haggler, that is someone who bargains, comes from this name). Anne

Oh joy of joys ! I get an itinerant peddler!!!! Why can't I have a rear Admiral, or a Duchess or Earl like other people! lol (mind you I am working on a possible link to Captain Smith of the Titanic - but it's all circumstancial as yet!) Thanks for looking for me Regards Maxine

HI Maxine. I just put Higgler into my search engine and it has come up with pages of baptisms all over the place. It picked up on the trade and there are quite a few higglers around. I'm going back for a further look. Roger

Hi Maxine I've found Higgler - meaning Itinerant Peddlar. There are a few sites for old occupations. You can use Google to search for them. Yvonne

Hi Guys I'm calling on your expertise again! I have found my great great great grandmother on the 1881 census, her husband is a Tailor, and she is described as a "Higglar", does anyone know what this means? Best Regards Maxine
