I would just like to say a big thank you to all who offered suggestions re: Grandfather's uniform. Many thanks, you have given me fresh enthusiasm and incentive! Linda.

Quite a few WWW sites, like Yahoo, have free services where you can post pictures. I would suggest uploading the picture to one of these sites and then post the URL here and other places. I was trying to identify some details of my Great Grandfather's uniform and medals so posted to the British Regiments group. I very quickly got a very detailed analysis of the pictures which turned out to be very accurate when I got more information. It might be worth suggesting to Genes Connected that they have a section where you can post pictures. You can add pictures to your tree but they are only visible to people who have access to the tree. Martin

Hello Jan, I suppose that is possible. Do they wear uniforms like that in the Merchant Navy? There were three sons and they all went into the Royal Navy, I wondered if they followed in their father's footsteps? Linda.

Hello Roger, I've studied the photo' again and it looks as if there might be a 'badge' or something on his left arm (mid-way between elbow and shoulder), and maybe a badge/pin or something on his right lapel? It is a very poor photo, taken in about 1925. If he was a Petty Officer would there be anywhere I could check records that you know of? I appreciate your help, I've been trying to find out about him for ages! Linda.

Hi Sally, Thanks for that. I'm sitting here wondering why I didn't think about the uniform before! Got to be a lead there somewhere. Linda.

Hello Eileen, Sorry, couldn't get back to you - **** computer! My Grandfather's name was William Grant. Dob 1884/5 - assuming his age was right on the marriage certificate. I would be grateful for anything you could find. Many thanks, Linda.

hello Linda, it sounds as though it is Naval, and an Officer at that. My husband has not long left the navy and you have discribed his uniform perfectly. You could do a search at Kew for anyone with his name and then wittle it down from there regards Eileen

I've been searching for months to find details of my Grandfather! All I know is that he married my Grandmother on 24th November, 1917, at the Parish Church of Heathfield, in East Sussex. Somewhere about 1925 he left her. On the marriage certificate it states that he was 32 (Dob 1884/5),and he was a sailor residing at Portsmouth at the time of the marriage. His father's name was James, also a sailor. I have found a photograph of him in a uniform (not a very clear piccie!) and it would appear that he has a double-breasted jacket with brass buttons, white shirt and tie, and a flat, peaked cap with emblem above peak. Can anyone tell if that is a Naval uniform, and possibly what rank? Tall order I know but I don't know where to look now and thought that might give me a lead. Thanks in advance, Linda in East Sussex.
