Thanks Anthony, Nina and Kathleen. The amount of assistance and collective knowledge on this site is amazing. I have tried the Lookup exchange but they could not help with this one. It looks as though my best course of action is to telephone the Bancroft Library as Kathleen suggests. Thanks again. Tricia

Hi Patricia, Bethnal Green is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets as you probably know. The Parish records for St Matthews, Bethnal Green are kept on Microfilm at Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives at Banroft Library, 277 Bancroft Road, London E1 (nearest Tube Station is Stepney Green or Mile End). The originals however have been deposited in the London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1. The Local History Librarian at Bancroft Library is most helpful, and if you telephone him with the details of date of marriage, names, etc, he will most likely send you a copy of the Parish record. There is a charge for this - about 50 pence, I believe!! Hope you get what you want, Kathy, Bicester, Oxon.

You have two choices :- Visit the London Metropolitan Archives and look at the film there //www(.)cityoflondon(.)gov(.)uk/family-research/registerSearchResults(.)asp?boroughID=&startdate=1834&phrase=bethnal+green&enddate=1834 or order the film at your local LDS centre - details on familysearch website

Tricia, As its pre-1837 you've probably got little choice but to see the original parish register. A quick look on GENUKI shows Bethnal Green comes under East of London FHS - it might be worth looking up their site & dropping them a line - as you know the date you might get them to do a lookup for you (they might charge a small fee). If its of any use, theres also lookups offered for the 1851 Bethnal Green census on Middx Lookup Exchange - this might give p.o.b. which might help to differentiate between individuals? Hi I Have a problem with deciding which of two choices is the correct one. I know that Thomas Edridge married Mary Ann Newton.17.02.1834 in St Matthews. Bethnal Green. I need to know how I can find the details of the marriage and if that will help me to decide which Thomas I need. Do I approach the church or do I need to go elsewhere. Tricia
