Roman numerals on registers-how to put on form?

I had to apply for a certificate where the volume no. was in Roman numerals, I just wrote them exactly as they appeared on the form, and received the certificate without problem or query. I don't know when they changed, but it doesn't seem to cause a problem. Jan.

I've noticed with some of my older ancestors that on their birth registration on "family research link" that the volume number is in roman numerals. when filling in an order form to order a certificate do I copy this and keep it in roman numerals? Does anyone know when it changed over to the newer system e.g 9c? Thanks Judith
