Thank you all so very much for all that info!! Andy, the Ryder name comes from it being Elizabeth's maiden name. The first son Thomas was Thomas Rider Cartledge. I always thought what an unusual middle name it was until i found the marriage of his parents! Tracey, Bolton

Just had a go with the quality setting at its highest and this is my interpretation of the information - agreed though, the names are incredibly paled out. Charles CARTLEDGE, Head, Married, 37 or 47, Cart Driver, Cheshire Congleton Elizabeth CARTLEDGE, Wife, Married, 44, Staffordshire Golden Hill Thomas RYDER, Son, Single, 21, Coachman Groom, Staffordshire Buddulph Mary RYDER, Daughter, Single, 19, Worsted Twister, Cheshire Congleton ***** CARTLEDGE, Daughter, 15, Woollen Pi****, Cheshire Congleton James Wm CARTLEDGE, Son, age ?, Woollen Pi****, Yorkshire Sowerby Bridge ***** CARTLEDGE, Daughter, age ?, Woollen Pi****, Yorkshire Sowerby Bridge Charles CARTLEDGE, Son, 5, Scholar, Yorkshire Sowerby Bridge ***** CARTLEDGE, Daughter, 2, Yorkshire Sowerby Bridge Martha RYDER, Mother, Widow, 72, Cheshire Astbury William Hy CARTLEDGE, 41, Lodger, Widower, Cart Driver, Cheshire Congleton Living at 21 Carlton Street, Sowerby Bridge As you can see there are 8 Cartledges in the list, however there are only 3 in the index; this is because the others are mistakenly listed under Ryder. The index suggests that the first Cartledge daughter is called Mary A, the second is called Martha and is aged 12, and the third is called Annie. James's age is given as 13. Charles's age is indecipherable, it looks like the digit 3 with a 4 written on top of it, or it could be the other way round! My advice would be to cross-check everything with information from other censuses. Interesting family though, wonder how it is that some are Ryders and some are Cartledges unless I'm missing something obvious. Sowerby Bridge is right next door to Halifax, so your hunch was correct. Andy.

Hello Tracey. I found the people, but unfortunately the writing on the page was too pale to read. This is what I was able to glean from the index pages: Sowerby, Yorkshire. ED 16, Eccl.Parish St. George Census Sowerby District 16, Image 17 Piece RG12/36000, Folio 141, Page 17 Charles Cartledge, age 37, born Congleton, Cheshire Elizabeth Cartledge, age 44, born Goldenhill, Staffs. Also on the same page, but I couldn't see whether it was at the same address was William Hy Cartledge, 41, Lodger, born Congleton. If anyone else wants to see if they can read the page, all the info they need is there, but I just couldn't even find their names, let alone his occupation. Hope this helps you a bit, anyway. Jan

Could anyone with access to 1891 please look for a Charles Cartlidge/Cartledge born Congleton, Cheshire in about 1854. His wifes name is Elizabeth and she was born in Beadle, Staffs.I think they might be in the Halifax area of Yorkshire. Thanks. Tracey, Bolton
