Helen in Kent Report 23 Sep 2003 15:24

Hello Jude, Had brainwave and looked up Rachel &John on 1881 census-Benenden- so went there this am. Nothing found but old graves very weather worn. Next went to Cranbrook, very busy for some reason, couldn't get parked so will try another time. Finally went to Frittenden and found one grave that reads as follows: In loving memory of Barbara Ann Rofe, died Dec. 19th 1927 aged 77. Also of Ernest Rofe, died 1906 aged 34; also George Rofe, died December 2oth 1914 aged 69; also George Rofe, died 1871, aged 9months. I suggest you write to vicars of St. George's church, Benenden, St. Dunstan's, Cranbrook and St. Mary's, Frittenden to see if they'll look at the registers. Have also e-mailed Benenden village to find out about The Manor House where John lived and worked. Good luck! Helen
