Hi, I'll try a shortish answer to a long question. At one time it was the Parish that provided poor relief. Only those entitled to it could apply to the Parish for money or food, clothing etc when in need. You had an automoatic right to relief if you were born in the parish. If you wanted to move from your home parish to another parish you had to have a settlement in that parish. You had to prove to the officials that you could provide for yourself and your family. Those with a trade had little trouble in being granted settlements. If you fell on hard times the parish would provide support. Others were allowed to move from parish to parish but were not granted settlements. When they fell on hard times they were "Removed" to their home parish. These removal orders can be found in Parish papers, as can settlements. The County record office should have any that survive. This is the very basic explanation you can read more about it in a "good" genealogy book. Hope this helps, Gwynne

You might have to consider that Joshua was not his real name. Like my gt uncle Arthur. He appears on the Census from age 1 yr as Arthur, everyone called him Arthur, I believe he was married as Arthur, but the name on his birth certificate (and therefore on any records referring to his birth/christening) was Walter. Please don't ask why, I just don't know. But it does make searches very difficult. Jan.

I was just about to ask same question as Alison...what are Settlement papers. 0n my tree I have a note of an 'Acknowledgement of Settlement' for an ancestor & his family, but don't know what is is. Anyone? Janet

Hi, Does the marriage record say he was "of this parish"? If so it may be worth looking for his settlement papers. These will be held at the County record office. If he was originally from another parish it will be given in the papers then you can search for his baptism there. Hope this helps, Gwynne

Found loads of Dugdales from Colne on IGI but not Joshua - found his marriage to Sarah Dixon on 20 Oct 1833. Sorry can't be of more help. Incidentally I've had loads of rellies getting married at 28 or even much later. It may even have been his second marriage - it seemed quite common for people to remarry quite quickly if their spouse died. Sue

Just a thought but could there be 2 with the same name? Marrying at 28 is not impossible but seems a little late for that era? Just a thought

I am trying to trace a Joshua dugdale who according to the 1841 census was born in Lancashire (1851 says Colne). He was born in approximately 1805 and was married in the local church (st bartholomews) in 1833. I have looked at births for this parish but have not found him. can ANYONE help?
